Now ‘The Dark Tower’ Might Star Russell Crowe, if It Ever Gets Made

Ron Howard’s latest attempt to get his adaptation of The Dark Tower going: how about if Russell Crowe is in this goddammer?
As you may recall from any of the inconsequential updates I’ve begrudgingly posted on the subject, Howard’s Stephen King adaptation has been languishing since its inception early last year. The director’s plan was to make The Dark Tower even larger than Lord of the Rings (if slightly less tower-filled), spreading the vast, nine-volume tale across three feature films and two limited-run television series.
He’d set the project up at Universal, with Javier Bardem attached to play the lead role of gunslinger Roland Deschain, but the studio dropped the project last July, back when they thought their future was in Battleship sequels. In March, Warner Bros. began cautiously considering Howard’s ambitious plan, but their reluctance to get started with things has reportedly cost them once-secured participation of Bardem. So, Deadline reports, Howard and writer Akiva Goldsman have now started talks to their Beautiful Mind star Russell Crowe in the lead role. After all, if Crowe can sell Goldsman lines like, “Perhaps it is good to have a beautiful mind, but an even greater gift is to discover a beautiful heart,” maybe he can sell this thing to Warner Bros. If not, then on to Will Smith.
Angelina Jolie & Brad Pitt’s Bloomberg Tower Tryst
Continuing forth with her east coast “In the Land of Blood and Honey” press blitz, Angelina Jolie headed off to a Charlie Rose interview at the Bloomberg Tower in New York City on Tuesday evening (December 6).
The “Salt” actress kept warm in a white jacket overtop her beige frock as she shuffled towards the Big Apple locale to meet up with partner Brad Pitt, who was spotted posing for pictures with fans outside the Midtown Manhattan skyscraper.
And while Miss Jolie is certainly excited about the upcoming December 23rd release of her directorial debut, she recently ran into a bump in the road – as a lawsuit has been filed following allegations of copyright infringement from a Croatian journalist.
According to reports, reporter James Braddock claims that “In the Land of Blood and Honey” violates copyright of his 2007 book “The Soul Shattering.”
With the suit having been filed in Illinois on Friday (December 2), Braddock alleges he met with one of the producers of the movie, Edin Sarkic, back in 2008 to talk about the possibility of taking his work to the big screen – though nothing transpired from that point forth.
Feeling betrayed, James is now seeking statutory damages and an injunction against the film.

Tower Heist — $25.1M
The workers at a posh Central Park condominium plot to steal back their pensions from the thieving Wall Street billionaire who’s about to get away with the ultimate white-collar crime in this heist comedy starring Ben Stiller and Eddie Murphy. Financial giant Arthur Shaw (Alan Alda) has just been placed under house arrest in his luxury New York City penthouse for cleaning out his investors to the tune of two billion dollars. Meanwhile, on the complete opposite end of the financial spectrum, Josh Kovacs… [more]

Eddie Murphy and Ben Stiller star as men who pair up to rob a man who bilked investors out of millions
‘Dark Tower’ Series Probably at HBO, Movie Part They’ll Figure Out Later

While doing press duties to convince the world that Ben Stiller, Eddie Murphy, and tower robbery is a winning combination, a freshly gelled and blow-dried Brian Grazer this weekend claimed he and Ron Howard’s epic Dark Tower is still a go, and on the television side, it will be paid for and aired by HBO.
The Stephen King adaptation had originally been planned as an NBC-Universal project, with a string of Universal films being supported by a limited-run NBC series. It would have been heavily reference in your textbook’s chapter on synergy. Unfortunately, the suits at General Electric got pretty skittish about making a huge fantasy western once they heard how much all these shadowy spires would cost them, and they abandoned the project.
But according to Grazer, he and Howard have now managed to chop the budget down by a cool $ 45 million, allowing the deal with HBO and, they figure, making a movie deal with some a film studio all but inevitable. He also seems to think Javier Bardem won’t mind these delays, and will still be up for the lead role of Roland Deschain just as soon as some lucky studio will fund a vast, elaborate, still-very-expensive fantasy western. What is the hold up, guys?
Theater Pressure Forces Cancellation of ‘Tower Heist’ House Parties

Last week, Universal unveiled a new plan for movie distribution that meant Brett Ratner’s Tower Heist would be available on video-on-demand just three weeks after its theatrical release, and around this great nation–or at least in Atlanta and Portland, where the new system was planned to be tested–a thrilled populous began planning who they would invite over to enjoy the Eddie Murphy/Ben Stiller comedy and help cover the $ 60 rental fee. If you weren’t hosting a Tower Heist party–and you lived in the Portland or Atlanta metropolitan area–then you were going to a Tower Heist party, and you were hoping other people would be going, too, so that you wouldn’t end up paying a huge share of this sixty bucks just to see Tower Heist out of theaters a little earlier. What a great time to be alive, and in Portland or Atlanta!
Well, you can cancel all those festivities, because I’ve got some bad news for you: you aren’t going to be able to pay sixty dollars to watch Tower Heist on cable. Due to pressure from the aptly-named National Association of Theater Owners (the other NATO!)–an organization that was worried all these Tower Heist parties would dramatically affect theater attendance–Universal has dropped the test plan, meaning you’re going to have quite a bit longer wait before any Tower Heist parties. Your homemade, ten-layer “Tower Dip” probably isn’t going to make it.
New ‘Tower Heist’ Trailer: Less Explicit Mention of Seizures, More Matt Lauer

After catching some flack for Eddie Murphy making epilepsy sound too hilarious in the first Tower Heist trailer, greaseball director Brett Ratner promised to rectify the situation with a new trailer for his action comedy that is about a tower heist. Here is said fixed trailer. Now Murphy’s description of Ben Stiller’s violent seizures has been edited so that it sounds like it’s about destroying a car, so it’s fine, OK, everyone?
P.S.: If this trailer gets you excited to see the film, no need to visit a theater! Assuming you have Comcast cable, and also live in either Atlanta or Portland, you will be able to watch Tower Heist just three weeks after its release through video-on-demand, and it will only cost you $ 59.99–all part of a Universal test to see if select markets are full of idiots who would like to throw some crazy money at a movie called Tower Heist.
