Harvey Weinstein, the man who first introduced us to Will Hunting and his friend with the carefully-rehearsed final monologue, is hoping to get Matt Damon and Ben Affleck back together. Though Damon and Affleck are already teaming up to produce an adaptation of DC’s Sleeper, according to Page Six, Weinstein wants them back on screen together for A Speck in the Sea.
The film is based on a Paul Tough’s New York Times story of the same name, an All Is Lost-esque tale of survival at sea. One of the actors would play John Aldridge, a 45-year-old lobsterman who fell into the Atlantic while his boat was on autopilot, forcing him to use his rubber boots as floatation devices for 12 hours before he was finally rescued (spoiler). The other would play Anthony Sosinski, Aldridge’s lobstering partner who was apparently asleep at the time of the incident. In other words, it’s a film about treading water and lazily dozing. How sadly relatable.
In retrospect, they probably should have had Benedict Cumberbatch play Will Ferrell’s mustache.

A hit at SXSW this year, where it picked up the Grand Jury and Audience Award for Narrative Feature, Short Term stars Brie Larson as a dedicated foster-care supervisor at a home for at-risk teens. She’s passionate about her job, and gets to work alongside her equally-impassioned boyfriend, but the arrival of a troubled girl soon begins to stir up memories of Larson’s own difficult past. Drama unfolds, cupcakes are destroyed, and so on, because not even truly good people can be spared from life’s constant indignities. Best to learn that now, before you try too hard.
Here’s the trailer:
Cinema’s last John le Carré adaptation, Tinker Tailor Gary Oldman, ended up being an amazing-looking, well-crafted thriller that didn’t get nearly the broader recognition it deserved. Anton Corbijn’s The American didn’t have quite the careful construction of that film, but likewise showed an admirable stylishness often lacking in the spy genre. I mention these things because they give good reason to have some interest in Corbijn’s latest, A Most Wanted Man, which will see him now apply his touch for style to the plotting of a le Carré–and with a solid cast too. Philip Seymour Hoffman, Rachel McAdams, Willem Dafoe, and Robin Wright star in the film, which takes place in present-day Germany, and sees Hoffman playing a spy on the trail of an ex-prisoner whose agenda isn’t clear. And as you can see from this first look at the film, it will also see Hoffman looking sad and weary, which is undoubtedly the most classic, beloved PSH experience. U.S. distribution isn’t yet secured, but will probably be worked out soon now that everyone has been promised a dejected Philip Seymour Hoffman. Come on, who can resist that adorably beaten face?
