2012 Costume Designers Guild Awards: A Complete Look
Tinseltown always loves a good awards event, and on Tuesday night (February 21) the 14th Annual Costume Designers Guild Awards came to Beverly Hills.
“Glee” actress Jane Lynch showed up at the Beverly Hills Hilton Hotel as host of the ceremony, as did big screen beauties such as Rooney Mara and Chloe Moretz.
Meanwhile, Kate Beckinsale was joined by husband Len Wiseman as she was the recipient of the Lacoste Spotlight Award.
Other fabulous stars in attendance included Penelope Ann Miller, Amber Valletta, Marcia Gay HardenMarcia Gay Harden and “The Office” actress Ellie Kemper while the night also paid tribute to Distinguished Collaborator Award winners Deborah Hopper and Clint Eastwood.
Academy Awards Voters Discovered To Be Old, White, Male

Ever wonder who casts the votes that decide if Meryl Streep made-believe better than her competition in any given year? Well, the L.A. Times did a little investigating into the matter and, fairly unsurprisingly, that decision is left largely to the old white guys.
According to the Los Angeles Times, the identities of the Academy’s nearly six-thousand members is a well-kept secret. There’s no published list of members, and not everyone you’d assume to be a member actually is. For example, as a non-member, Woody Allen will not be able to vote for his Midnight in Paris this year, whereas Vin Diesel, a known member, will get the chance to give his vote to War Horse, which he enjoyed because he pretended the horse was a car. That’s fucked up, right?
But the surprising case of Woody Allen v. Vin Diesel is about the only case of non-white youth triumphing over retirement-age caucasian guys you’ll find in the membership roster. As the Times study found, the Academy’s voting body looks pretty much like every other major decision-making party in the U.S.: a bunch of old white guys making largely-stupid choices that pretty much only other old white guys agree with. Oscar voters are reportedly almost 94% white and 77% male; black and Latino voters combined make up less than 4% of the Academy. That’s a pretty huge discrepancy from the Academy Awards enrollment brochures, which always depict a crowd of hoodie-wearing mixed-race youths hangin’ in the Academy quad.
Like the line in a Sizzler salad bar, the median age of the crowd is 62, and only 14% of the voting membership is under 50 years old. Just 2% is under 40. Basically, the higher the likelihood of a filmgoer drifting off in the middle of a film, the greater the chance they will later be voting that film as Best Sound Mixing for rousing them awake.
The report also brings to the light the fact that Academy membership is for life, meaning the voters can at times be far removed from the industry they’re meant to be a part of. Through their study, the Times found this to be cast in numerous instances: one voter is now a nun; another a retired Peace Corps recruiter; still another used to be on CHiPs, but is now just Erik Estrada. Their votes are given just as much weight as the vote of Tom Hanks. TOM HANKS.
So, when Meryl Streep ends up winning Best Actress, even though you were sure Viola Davis was a pretty good bet, now you know who to blame for losing the office Oscar pool. As usual, blame mostly old white guys. And Erik Estrada.

Rihanna’s Pre-Birthday BRIT Awards Rehearsals
Looking stylish in a denim jacket and striped tights, Rihanna was greeted by a large group of eagerly awaiting fans as she departed her central London hotel on Sunday (February 19).
The Barbadian beauty – who turns 24-years-old tomorrow – is situated in the UK capital city as she readies for Tuesday night’s BRIT Awards.
Among the show’s performers, RiRi spent part of the day practicing up for the gig, as she tweeted, “Brit rehearsal went smoove! Next stop, set up studio in a hotel room! I’ll be turning 24 making mu$ ic!!!”
Also among the nominees, the “We Found Love” singer is in the running for International Female Solo Artist honors while competing against Beyonce, Bjork, Feist and Lady Gaga.
Yolanda Adams’ NAACP Awards Tribute to Whitney Houston
Taking a respite from honoring the past year’s top African-American entertainers, the 43rd NAACP Image Awards followed suit with previous awards shows in holding a tribute for recently departed icon Whitney Houston during Friday night’s (February 17) ceremony.
With the annual event taking place at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles, Gospel great Yolanda Adams took the stage alongside a gospel choir while celebrating the life of the “I Will Always Love You” singer.
Previously speaking with press about learning of Miss Houston’s tragic death, Miss Adams recalled, “My initial reaction when I heard she passed was, ‘Can’t be’.”
Receiving the saddening news from Whitney’s long-time music director, Yolanda then told, “He said, ‘she’s gone,’ and although I had heard it on the news, there was finality to hear it from someone who loved her like I do.”
“She was someone I could say was a friend, was really genuinely a child of God, really genuinely a good person who loved life. We really are losing a light. Despite all the dark stuff people will say, we’re losing an angel because she really was. I think what happens with people is they want to be loved,” Adams added.
