Joss Whedon has confirmed that The Avengers 2 will not see Loki fully rehabilitated and ready to party with all his new best friends. Loki won’t be in there at all, in fact. Speaking to Empire, the writer-director explained that he fears the inclusion of Loki would just have everyone waiting for the character to finally spout his hilarious catchphrase, saying:
“Everyone is going to be looking for the Loki-Hulk smash moment and you’ll be looking for [a “mewling quim” moment]. First of all, imitating what I did before is the surest way to do it not as well. Second of all, Loki’s not there to say those terrible things.”
You’re right about that, Whedon. But since it increasingly seems the reason Loki is there is to sit around in a transparent prison cell, maybe he could still come back for some gritty, Oz-style intros?
The Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Avengers team may soon be counting some new super-powered heroes among their ranks who are clearly more useful than Hawkeye. At the recent Iron Man 3 premiere, Avengers writer-director Joss Whedon heavily suggested as much, telling The Hollywood Reporter that, among new characters, “There may be a brother-sister act from back in the days when I was reading [the comic].” As Donny and Marie have only ever shown affiliation with Superman, thoughts have naturally gone to Scarlet Witch and her brother, Quicksilver.
They’re the daughter and son of Magneto, which you’d think would put them in the possession of Fox and their X-Men universe, but according to Marvel Studios’ Kevin Feige, since they were also Avengers members, the rights are split and both studios can use the siblings. Lawyers have already been paid to work out the legal details of a super-fast guy in baby blue spandex and his witch sister, so don’t you worry about that.
Oh, and if you didn’t know, Quicksilver is a super-fast guy in baby blue (originally green, as you can see above) spandex, and Scarlet Witch is a witch and she wears reddish stuff. But Joss Whedon will explain all that to you in 2015.
As we’ve already learned he’s wont to do, Jean-Claude Van Damme has found himself once again getting a little too excited in public.
While posting this adjacent photo of his 1994 self caressing Stan Lee, the actor on Sunday decided to also propose a new Marvel connection, basically saying he’d be up for joining The Avengers 2, should Earth’s next threat require a 50-something Belgian guy.
“Well, it would be fun to play one of these types of amazing comic book characters again,” Van Damme wrote–but not without prompt, as he also made clear, “I read that Chris Hemsworth (star of “Thor” and brother of Liam Hemsworth, “The Expendables 2″) would like me to costar in “The Avengers 2″ movie!” Which, obviously, no, that’s not really the case–though it is slightly more true than you might imagine. LatinoReview points to this ten-month-old USA Today story, where The Avengers cast was asked who they’d add to the team. Chris Evans said Salma Hayek (she has yet to formally respond via Facebook), while Hemsworth did, in fact, say “Van Damme,” specifying: “from Bloodsport. A big kick to the alien head.”
So, yeah, you probably shouldn’t be expecting to see him in Avengers anytime soon. But on the plus side, you can apparently expect to see him rendered in oil paint very soon. “Keep an eye on my Facebook wall, everyone,” Van Damme writes, following a post in which he verifies that he is not dead. “I am announcing the ‘JCVD Artwork Contest’ soon.”
Would you like The Avengers to play out more like a John Hughes coming-of-age story, only with far less dancing? Hey, you’re in luck: thanks to dondrapersayswhat, now the visuals of the Marvel film have been matched up to original trailer for The Breakfast Club, telling a slightly different tale of disperate archetypes bonding over shared problems, and aliens. Here you go:
Wait, so is the janitor Thor or Hawkeye?
Because Scarlett Johansson was the only woman on The Avengers and her breasts weren’t even impossibly huge, io9 reports Emily Blunt, who almost played Black Widow, might show up in The Avengers 2 as Carol Danvers a.k.a. Ms. Marvel whose powers include respecting her marriage to Mr. Marvel while still maintaining an air of mystery Read More …
True to his spirit of writing in strong female roles that reporters can ask about being strong and female, Joss Whedon has reportedly added Ms. Marvel to the cast of his The Avengers 2.
So says a brief item in The Daily Mail, which claims Emily Blunt and Luther‘s Ruth Wilson are up for the role of the alien-human hybrid superhero. The rumor makes sense considering Whedon’s record and the intergalactic direction the Marvel universe is headed in–and Blunt was even once said to be up for the Black Widow part that fell to Scarlett Johansson. Though it’s also worth mentioning that The Daily Mail is a tabloid, and that this story is tacked onto the bottom of an article about Stella McCartney changing the price of an apartment she’s selling, which makes less sense. But, hey, that might happen! And, yikes, apartment prices, are they right?
