Why do older movies released on blu ray tend to be more expensive than newer releases?
Question by Hollywood Jono: Why do older movies released on blu ray tend to be more expensive than newer releases?
In some cases you could end up paying close to $ 30 or even beyond for a movie that first came out 20 something years ago just now coming out on blu ray than blu ray releases of more recent movies from the last 5-6 years. Why does this often tend to be the case? FYI, the movie is also available at bargain basement prices on standard DVD.

How much does it take when they release a movie/episode?
Question by Mother M: How much does it take when they release a movie/episode?
I mean, like…for an episode how long do they rehearse? And film? And how long do they wait for the people to release it? Same for the movie, too, please! Thanks!

It depends on the type of show or movie; and don’t forget that there are different phases of making the TV show or film. Pre-production, where the script is written, the roles are cast, and the sets are built; production, when the actual footage is shot; and post-production, when the film or show is edited down to a final product.
For a TV show, you have to keep in mind that at any given time, they’re working on multiple episodes–e.g. on a given day a few are in the process of being written, one is being shot, and one or two are being edited.
For a typical network sitcom like “How I Met Your Mother,” the script takes a few weeks to write. The actors get their scripts on Monday (guest stars are cast a week or two beforehand); they do a “table read” where all the actors read their lines to see how the show flows, what jokes work, and what parts of the script may need tweaking. Rehearsals continue on Tuesday, and the show films on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday (shows that have a studio audience, like “Two and a Half Men,” film on Thursday or Friday, doing the exact same show twice so that in the editing process, they can choose the better version of each scene from the two takes).
Then the show is edited, a process that usually takes a week or two. Then the show is ready for air–but of course when it actually gets aired depends on the network’s schedule; sometimes it’s as early as a few days after it’s done editing, sometimes it’s a few weeks.
So basically, on a sitcom, they shoot a new episode every week, but pre-production and post-production take additional time. A show like HIMYM shoots from August to March, taking sizable breaks for holidays.
Hourlong dramas usually take 7 to 10 working days to rehearse and shoot, but essentially the process is the same.
With movies, again there’s a wide range of projects, differing in scope, budget, and genre, and each take different lengths of time. A low-budget film that’s mostly drama and has very little in the way of special effects can take just a couple of weeks to shoot and several weeks to edit, while a big-budget special effects movie like Avatar or The Dark Knight Rises could take years from shooting to release (the new Superman movie was done filming months ago, but won’t be in theaters until Summer 2013).
And when it comes to movies that aren’t surefire blockbuster hits, even when they’re complete the studio can take its time to release the movie at an appropriate time, taking into consideration the time of year (e.g., horror movies around Halloween time, holiday movies around Christmas, romantic movies around Valentine’s day; big-budget blockbusters around the holidays and early summer) as well as possible competition (you don’t necessarily want to release your movie on the same weekend that a big movie that everyone wants to see is coming out).

Watch the Shouty, Surprisingly-Serious Trailer for Justin Long’s Steve Jobs Biopic

After years of bringing the Mac brand to life as a guy you’d like to choke, Justin Long at last become his maker in iSteve, the Steve Jobs biopic that’s beating the Kutcher version to the punch in remembrance via someone from That ’70s Show. Arriving on Funny or Die April 15th, the shortish-length film is ostensibly a comedy–judging by the above photo and the site’s explicit death penalty policy–but you don’t really get that much of that from this teaser for the film. What you do get is the reminder that no one is even trying to get a Kickstarter going for Justin Long’s cult-appreciated NBC sitcom, Ed. What’s the hold up here?
